Professor Markham has wide experience in academic research and development, both clinical and non-clinical.

He has a DSc in chemistry from the University of Birmingham. He trained in medicine at St. Mary's Hospital, London and at the University of Oxford. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians, Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

He has held academic research positions at Osaka University (Japan), Imperial College (London), the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (Cambridge) and Harvard Medical School (USA). His industrial employment includes GD Searle (now Monsanto), and ICI (now Astra-Zenica) Pharmaceuticals and Diagnostics Divisions, as scientist, research manager and development director. He has consulted for several biotechnology companies, as well as on Intellectual Property Rights issues, for major pharmaceutical companies such as Boehringer-Mannheim.

At present he is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Molecular Medicine Unit, University of Leeds. He has chaired the MRC Clinical Research Training Panel, been a member of the Wellcome Trust Molecular and Cell Panel and served on several Department of Health bodies including the Gene Therapy Advisory Committee. Professor Markham has published more than 300 papers relating to chemistry, molecular biology, molecular genetics and is an inventor of over 30 patent applications.
